Curtain Measuring Guide
Get the Perfect Fit Every Time
Measuring for curtains doesn’t have to be complicated. Just follow our simple step-by-step guide to ensure a professional, made-to-measure finish.
🪟 Step 1: Decide Where You Want to Hang Your Curtains
Option A: Above the Window Frame
-
For a more dramatic look and to make the window appear taller, fit the pole or track 15–20cm (6–8 inches) above the window.
Option B: Inside the Recess
-
Ideal for a neat, flush look. Only use this option if you're not concerned about blocking out all light.
📏 Step 2: Measure the Width
If Using a Curtain Pole:
-
Measure the full width of the pole (excluding decorative finials).
-
For gather fullness, multiply the pole width by:
-
1.5x for a standard gather
-
2x for a fuller, more luxurious look
-
If Using a Curtain Track:
-
Measure the full width of the track from end to end.
📐 Step 3: Measure the Drop (Height)
Your drop measurement depends on how you want your curtains to fall:
Heading Styles:
-
Pencil Pleat / Eyelet / Tab Top:
-
Measure from the top of the pole or track to where you want the curtain to end.
-
Standard drop lengths: Sill, Below Sill, or Floor Length.
-
Style | Drop Point |
---|---|
Sill length | 1 cm above the windowsill |
Below sill | 15–20 cm below the windowsill |
Floor length | 1 cm above the floor (or longer for pooling) |
For eyelet curtains, measure from the top of the pole and add 2.5cm to account for the eyelet position.
🔧 Top Tip:
-
Always use a metal tape measure for accuracy.
-
Double-check each measurement twice.
-
Make a note of any obstructions (radiators, handles, skirting) that may affect the curtain drop.
